Savannah Folk Music
Festival
2012 Festival
Youth Songwriting Competition
Submission Deadline: August 15th, 2012
The 23rd Annual Savannah Folk
Music Festival, presented by the Savannah Folk Music Society on October 12,
13 and 14, 2012, will feature the 2012 Youth Songwriting Competition.
The purpose of this competition is to encourage young people from the
Greater Savannah Area, Tri-County and Jasper / Beaufort County SC to
develop their skills in musical and lyrical expression, promote the
time-honored method of storytelling by song, and recognize outstanding
achievement in these efforts. Any youth resident of the Greater Savannah
Area, Chatham, Bryan and Effingham County in Georgia as well as Jasper and
Beaufort County South Carolina who has not reached his or her twentieth birthday
by the conclusion of the competition, October 13, 2012 is eligible to
participate. Those who wish to participate must submit an original song
written in the acoustic folk ballad tradition by 15th August 2012
on a compact disc. The songwriter may accompany him or herself or have one
or more other individuals provide instrumental accompaniment. By “acoustic
folk tradition” the competition includes story-song ballads and excludes
such musical forms as hip-hop, rap, jazz and rock and roll. ONLY ONE
ENTRY PER PERSON.
From those entries submitted by the 15th
August 2012 deadline, a panel of judges will use common criteria to select
a group of finalists. These finalists will be notified and required to
perform their compositions at an event, open to the public, on the
afternoon of October 13th 2012. At that time, judges will select
the top three submissions. Third place will receive a $200 gift certificate
to PORTMANS’s MUSIC SUPERSTORE. Second place will receive a $300 gift
certificate to PORTMAN’s. The first place winner will receive a $500 gift
certificate to PORTMAN’s and will be
invited to perform the winning composition on the next day, October 14th,
during the Festival’s final event, “The Concert at GRAYSON STADIUM,” along
with major folk performers Deidre McCalla, Curley Maple, Al Petteway &
Amy White and Doug MacLeod.
Those interested in participating or having
questions may contact Chris Desa of the Savannah Folk Music Society by
